Even though group trips can be an amazing experience, nothing allows a person to unwind and discover themselves quite like a solo vacation. These trips allow an individual to explore a new environment and take things at their own pace, without worrying about others’ needs. Many, however, are turned away by the fear of the unknown and uncertainty that comes with taking a trip by yourself. To safely execute your journey, make sure you use these tips for planning a solo vacation.

Map Out Your Route

Planning out roughly where you’re headed before you leave is a great way to keep yourself, and your trip, on track. You’ll be able to make it to your destinations quicker while saving yourself some time to check out new locations that catch your eye. Since you’ll most likely be traveling to places you haven’t been before, this will also help prevent you from getting lost.

Make Accommodations Early

You should also take some extra time to book your hotel rooms and reserve your spots at events you want to attend. This will not only ensure that you always have a roof over your head during your trip, but also guarantee your entrance at these planned activities. Remember that, while you can always cancel a room if you end up not needing it, it’s often harder to find a new room last-minute.

Inform Someone About Your Plans

Because you won’t be traveling with others, no one will be around to recognize a situation that’s gone wrong. As such, it’s crucial that you tell your family members or close friends where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing. Be sure to also check in with them on occasion to reassure them that you’re alright.

Pack Only the Essentials

If you will have several stops along your route, you’re going to want to pack light. This will make transitioning between hotels significantly easier, as well as leave you enough space for souvenirs on the way back. Pack all your valuables in separate bags and keep your cash and identification in different places on your person.

Be Adventurous

Whether you’re traveling across the country or to a select location, there are various ways to make your solo road trip fun. The key here is to let yourself explore the unfamiliar surroundings and discover new things to try. These spontaneous moments will allow you to make some of your most treasured memories. So, be sure to plan for these moments when writing out your itinerary by leaving yourself free time.

However, remember that just because you’re being spontaneous, it doesn’t mean you can’t still be cautious. It’s important that you take extra measures to stay safe and protect yourself when in a new environment.
