If your goal for a trip is to see unique and beautiful sights, there’s nothing quite like the great coral reefs. Sought after by tourists and aquarium owners alike, these vibrant, colorful, and breathtaking organisms are some of the most awe-inspiring sights on the planet. As such, they’re surely worth a visit. These are a few of the largest coral reefs in the world and where you can find them.
The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is widely known as the largest coral reed on Earth and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. With almost 3,000 individual reefs and over 800 islands incorporated in its system, you could see it from various perspectives and locations. But, as far as central location goes, this reef is located in the middle of the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
New Caledonian Barrier Reef
Though this reef isn’t as large as the Great Barrier Reef, it holds the record for the longest stretching reef in the world. Located off the New Caledonia island in the South Pacific Ocean, the New Caledonian Barrier Reef is home to a diverse range of exotic marine life. This diversity makes it a wonderful place to look for unique species of fish, turtles, and manatees as well as coral.
Belize Barrier Reef
With crystal-clear waters and the shores of Belize a short boat ride away, this reef is one of the most accessible as well as the second-largest on Earth. Only about 300 meters away from land, it’s easy to find a ride out to where this system lives. Along with the standard marine life found in these waters, this is also a great spot to see manatees and the rare American marine crocodile.
As beautiful as these reefs are, it’s also important to remember that they’re equally delicate. In fact, there are many conservation efforts underway, such as coral aquaculture, to preserve them for future generations. If you want to visit these astounding locations, make sure you respect their beauty enough to not damage the reefs.
