The Best Ways to Avoid Getting Sick on Vacation

Taking a vacation is a great way to get a break from the stresses of daily life. Since so much organization and excitement goes into planning your trip, the last thing you want is to take ill while on vacation. To ensure you don’t spend a single moment of your precious vacation laid up in bed with a cold—and to ensure you can experience every moment of your trip to the fullest—we’ve compiled a list of some of the best ways to avoid getting sick on vacation.

Practice good hygiene

One of the best ways to avoid getting sick on vacation is to practice good hygiene. During your vacation, you’ll likely visit a lot of unfamiliar places and come in contact with a lot of strangers. As such, you’ll likely come in contact with an excessive influx of germs and bacteria. Planes, hotels, and public transportation are all breeding grounds for bacteria, and practicing good personal hygiene is the best way to protect against these germs. Wash your hands regularly, and sanitize any areas that strangers may have touched, such as the plane tray table and your hotel room’s phone and remote control. Carrying hand sanitizer with you is also a helpful precaution against germs.

Understand the signs of sickness

Recognizing the tell-tale signs of sickness is the key to nipping illness in the bud. Unfortunately, many illnesses often exhibit similar symptoms. For instance, food poisoning often manifests many of the same symptoms as the flu. Recognizing the warning signs of common illnesses, therefore, will put you in a better position to deal with any illness in the event it does hit. Not all illnesses are created equal, so understanding the difference between viral and bacterial infections is important—the symptoms and treatments for each are quite different. Viral infections, such as the common cold and the flu, are slightly more common in travelers, as they’re transmitted through contact with contaminated items or individuals.

Take a break

Taking breaks is likely the absolute last thing you want to do while you’re on vacation, but it will help you stay healthy in the long run. Jumping from activity to activity may be the best way to maximize your vacation time, but it can also cause you to overexert yourself, and it may make you more susceptible to illness. Allocating one day of your vacation to simply rest and recuperate will help your body regain the energy it needs to ward off illnesses. Be sure you’re also getting an adequate amount of sleep while on vacation. Our bodies are better able to recuperate at rest, so be sure to get a good night’s sleep every day.

Be mindful

Your vacation may be a break from your daily stressors, but it shouldn’t be a break from self-care. Paying attention to your body and recognizing the first signs of illness will help you ward them off more quickly. Treat your body well while you’re on vacation, and you’ll be less susceptible to sickness. Try to maintain good nutrition and to stay hydrated throughout the course of your trip. This will give you the energy you need to tick off every last thing on your bucket list while keeping you healthy at the same time.
