And, for every pair you purchase (or any of MADI Apparel’s line of eco-friendly basic staples for women and men), MADI donates a pair of new underwear to women in domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters and rape crisis centers. Buy one, give one. Why underwear? Underwear tops the most urgent needs list of nearly every domestic violence and homeless shelter and rape crisis center. Those organizations receive clothing and household goods donations, but rarely new underwear. The underwear(and all of the line,) is made in the US from viscose from bamboo, beautiful high-end fabric that is self wicking, anti microbial, quick drying, wrinkle resistant and nearly 100% biodegradable and compostable. The fabric is four way stretch so no elastic at all! Not only is the bamboo fabric very sustainable, but MADI is a woman-owned small business and they hire woman-owned cut and sew teams to manufacture the underwear in the US, substantially lowering their carbon footprint. So far, MADI has donated over 7,500 pairs of underwear to women in need through 26 partnered organizations including domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, rape crisis centers and international aid organizations.

Finding good female underwear for walking is quite an uphill task for women. On one hand, you have flimsy cotton underwear that horribly underperforms when it comes to long hikes. In fact, cotton underwear is the last thing I’d want on my body if I’m hiking. It absorbs too much water and doesn’t offer any insulation. On the other one, you have merino underwear, which may be expensive, or too warm when you hike in hot weather. Going for a synthetic piece may be the perfect middle ground, and it’s definitely worked for me. The flatlock seams on this underwear really work for me. Be it that tough walk in a really hot climate, or that long hike across tough terrain, the underwear manages to hold fast, and still feel comfortable. The fact that the whole unit is made of breathable mesh means that it’s fast-drying, which is a huge advantage when you love camping like me.

These boxer briefs are, without a doubt, the best on the market. Smartwool has created a brief that is built to last, using a blend of merino wool and nylon. This short is our top selection since it is made of 87% merino wool and 13% nylon. The construction begins with a nylon core that is covered in merino wool. Because chaffing is not an advantage of hiking, the Merino 150 has flat-lock seams and quick-drying technology. The merino wool is soft on your skin, and the boxer fits snugly yet comfortably. Merino wool’s odour-resistant properties will appeal to serious hikers. This is a plus if you’re on a lengthy walk and can’t change your underpants every day.
